Janice Theresa Burden

Janice BurdenJanice Theresa Burden, 53, of 6120 Stibor St., Las Vegas, Nev., entered eternal rest in Las Vegas.

She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and was a daughter of Catherine Ross Jones and the late Marion Jones Jr.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by three sons, Daniel Sorrells, Darius Sorrells of Las Vegas, and David Sorrells of St. Mary’s, Ga.; four brothers, Herbert O’Neal Ross of Nevada, Warren L. Jones, Rickey Jones, both of New Jersey, and Mitchell Jones of New York; two sisters, Yvette Jones of Maryland and Theresa Jones-Guy of New York.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 12, at 2 p.m at St. Peter Missionary Baptist Church, Grover, N.C., with the Rev. William Thompson officiating and the Rev. Lewis Duckett Jr. delivering the eulogies. Interment will be in Clingman Memorial Gardens, Blacksburg.

The family is at the home of her mother, Catherine Jones, 103 N. Chester St., Blacksburg.

Cheryl Norris Dawkins

Widow of James Dawkins, she was born in Gaffney and was a daughter of the late Ernestine Norris. She was a member of Mitchell Chapel F.B.H. Church and a retired employee of the Peachtree Centre.

Surviving are her godfather, Calvin Linder of Gaffney; god son, Breyon Makupson of Gaffney; god daughters, Miracle Byers and Sharda Smith of Spartanburg; aunt, Mary Dover (Donald) of Gastonia, N.C.; great-aunt, Lillian Jefferies of Gastonia; uncles, Robert Byers, Bobby Dover (Carolyn), and Rev. Robert Dover, all of Gaffney; a sister, Nita Norris of Columbia; and special friend, Vincent Stevens of Carlisle.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 5, at noon in The Gilmore Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Michael Hill officiating. Interment will be in Limestone Cemetery.

The family is at the home of Calvin Linder, 700 Broad St.

Malinda Howell Whitesides

9p1Malinda Howell Whitesides, 94, of Greensboro, N.C., formerly of Blacksburg, entered eternal rest on Monday, March 31, 2014, in Heartland Living Center, Greensboro.

Widow of Roscoe Whitesides, she was born in Waco, N.C., and was a daughter of the late Herbert and Gertrude Corry Howell Smith. She was a member of Hopewell Presbyterian Church, where she served as a Girl Scout leader.

On June 1, 1962, she graduated in the first nursing class from Granard High School of Practical Nursing and began a career as a Licensed Practical Nurse at Cherokee County Memorial Hospital. After retiring, she served as a Homemaker Health Aide under the auspices of Cherokee County Services to the Aging.

She was preceded in death by her “second father,” Amzi A Smith; brothers, Fleetwood Howell, Willard Howell, Alva Howell and Cooper Smith; and sisters, Cyphese H. Sims, Rosalyn H. Miller and Chineta S. Gamble.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter, Clarissa W. Epps of Gastonia; granddaughter, Alexis Harris of Gastonia; a brother, Gilbert (Rose) Howell of Greensboro; sisters, Valentine (Harold) Allen of Greensboro, Evangeline Goodwin of Westbury, N.Y., Gretna Ashe of Baltimore, Md., Doris (Irvin) Holt of Salisbury, N.C., and Ruby (Charles) Hargrove of Deland, Fla.; sister-in-law, Doris Smith of Gaffney; a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Monday, April 7, at 11 a.m. at Hopewell Presbyterian Church in Blacksburg with the pastor, Rev. Anitonette Gardner, officiating and Rev. Chineta Smith Goodjoin delivering the eulogy. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
