George W. Hardy

30p1.preview-3George Washington Hardy, 87, of 615 Gardner St., entered eternal rest on Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2014, at his home.

Widower of Earlene Smith Hardy, he was born in Cherokee County on Feb. 22, 1927, to William and Lemuel McGill Hardy. He was a member of Concord Baptist Church, Concord All Male Choir and Mountain View Lodge 301.

George was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a son, Lemuel, and siblings, Converse, Fitzhugh and Thomas Hardy, Iberia Hardy and Mary Smith; and two grandchildren, Ava Mack and Quinlisha Hardy.

Surviving are two sons, George W. Hardy Jr. (Pam) and David Hardy, all of Lockport, N.Y.; four daughters, Georgia Lindo and Frances Drain, both of Lockport, Mamie Black of Columbia and Patricia Hardy of Niagara Falls, N.Y.; 25 grandchildren, including Michael Hardy, who was raised in the home as his son; 24 great-grandchildren; 65 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 17, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Concord Baptist Church with Dr. Michael A. Bridges officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. He will lie in state from 1-2 p.m.

The family is at his home and at the home of his niece, Mary Lipscomb, 616 Littlejohn St.

Reverend Edgar Smith

goldprayinghands2The Rev. Edgar Smith, 81, of 3680 Greenbrier Mossy Dale Road, Winnsboro, entered eternal rest on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2014, in the Dorn VA Center in Columbia.

Born in Cherokee County, he was the son of the late Lawrence and Olivia McKissick Smith.

He was a former member of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church and a veteran of World War II.

Rev. Smith was preceded in death by 10 siblings: Rosa, Lawrence, Jr., Coleen, Paul, Preston, Precious, Iola and Reverends Lewis, Travis and Y.C. Smith.

Surviving are two brothers, Roosevelt Smith of Greensboro, N.C., and Silas Smith of Winston-Salem, N.C.; sisters-in-law, Thelma Smith of Gaffney and Diane Smith of Winston-Salem; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 13, at 2:30 p.m. in The Gilmore Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Mills McHam officiating. Interment will be Monday in M.J. Dolly Cooper Veteran’s Cemetery in Anderson.

The family is at the home of Thelma Smith, 1001 Clary St.

Aaron Johnson, Jr.

Johnson3Aron Johnson, Jr., 53, of 4075 Springs Road, Conover, NC, died Wednesday in Carolinas Medical Center.

He was born in Cleveland County and was a son of the late Rev. Aron Johnson, Sr. and Lydia Borders Johnson-Gregory.

Aron was employed at Hickory Springs Furniture Company, Hickory, NC.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four siblings, Jackie, Johnny, Alexander and Cathea.

Surviving are: 2 daughters, Deunica Logan (Marvin) of Gaffney and China Swint of Shelby; brothers, Jesse, Matthew, Charles, Grover and Ricky Gregory, all of Gaffney, SC, Clarence Gregory of Columbia, SC and William Hopper of Greenville, SC; 5 sisters, Verdie Degree of Shelby, Katie Sarratt (Johnel) of Mooresboro, Sarah Jackson and Selma Phillips of Gaffney, and Terrie Covington of Chicago, IL; five grandchildren, Dez’Janay, Shaun, Melvin, Margeouna, and King; nieces and nephews, including a niece, Lydia Williams (Chad), raised as a daughter, and nephew, William Tyrone Johnson Kim), raised as his son; special friend, Melissa Page, and her children, Kylar, Kamryn, Kara and Kala Thompson, all of the home.

Funeral services will be Monday, 3:00 p.m., in Grace Community Baptist Church in Shelby with Dr. Joseph Sanders-Parks officiating. Interment will follow in Gaffney Memorial Park. He will lie in state Monday from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the church.

The family is at the home of Lydia and Chad Williams, 6026 Emerald Lane, Shelby, NC.
