Vernice Dawkins “Bunt” Montgomery

vernice-montgomeryMrs. Vernice Dawkins “Bunt” Montgomery, 90, of 208 Dogwood Drive, entered eternal rest on Monday, October 12th, in Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home.

Widow of Julius Montgomery, she was born in Cherokee County and was a daughter of the late James Haskell “Hack” Dawkins and the late Rena Mayberry Dawkins.

She was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.

Mrs. Montgomery was preceded in death by: three children, Robert Montgomery, Lorene Allen, and Elnora Littlejohn; and siblings, Robert, Gabe, Calvin, and T.L. Dawkins and Charles Durrah, Shirley Cumberlander, Julia Mae Smith, Mary Worthy, and Jacqueline Lightning.

Surviving: 5 sons, James “Red” Montgomery, Eddie Montgomery (Marjorie), Matthew Montgomery, Crawley Montgomery (Straucey), all of Gaffney, and Terry Montgomery (Karen) of Cowpens; 4 daughters, Esther Byers (Rev. Lee) and Sheila Posey (Frankie) of Gaffney, Carolyn Watson (Terry) of Duncan, SC and Andrea Gregory of York, SC; two sisters, Maxine McFadden (David) of New York City and Wilma Davis (Lavander) of Gaffney; 46 grandchildren, including Kathy Littlejohn (James), Shanetta Posey (Trey) and Julitan “Chin” Foster (Misha), raised in the home; 108 great-grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-great grandchildren; son-in-law, Donnie Ray Littlejohn of Gaffney; aunts, Lenora Camp of Huntersville, NC and Trudy Dawkins of Gaffney; sisters-in-law, Bessie Jean Dawkins, Melissa Durrah and Margaret Montgomery.

Services will be Friday, 3:00 p.m., in Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. C.A. Wallace officiating and Rev. Lee Byers delivering the eulogy. Interment will follow in Oakland Cemetery.

She will lie in state Friday at 1:00 p.m. in the church.

Boyd Lee Smith Jr.

Boyd-SmithBoyd Lee Smith, Jr., 60, of 425 E. Dr. L.M. Rosemond Lane, entered eternal rest on Friday, October 9th, in Mary Black Gaffney Medical Center.

He was born in Gaffney and was a son of Hazel Pearson Smith and the late Boyd Smith, Sr.

He was a former brick mason with Cherokee Masonry and Barton Construction Company.

Boyd was preceded in death by a sister, Bessie Smith, and a brother, Charles Henry Smith.

Surviving are: his mother, Hazel Smith; his companion, Yvonne Rankin Foster; a son, Josh Rankin; daughter, Tizley Rankin; 4 brothers, Joe, David, Jackie, and Timothy Smith (Kisha); 3 sisters, Marsha Rainey, Hazel Smith, and Pheobe Smith; all of Gaffney; one aunt, Julie Burgess of Campobello, SC; 4 grandchildren including Kiera Rankin, raised in the home; 1 great-grandchild.

Services will be Monday, 2:00 p.m., in The Gilmore Mortuary Chapel with Rev. Darrell Smith officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Tabor Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family is at the home of Yvonne Rankin, 425 E. Dr. L.M. Rosemond Lane and at the home of his mother, Mrs. Hazel Smith, 407 Barclay Ave.

Earnest Hall Baker

earnest-bakerEarnest Hall Baker, 86, of 53 Wabash Drive, Ellenwood, Georgia, entered eternal rest on Wednesday in Piedmont Henry Hospital, Stockbridge, GA.

Widower of Earnestine Linder Baker, he was born in Sparta, GA and was a son of the late Jessie and Lula Wilson Baker.

He was a member of Beulah Baptist Church in Georgia and a former member and trustee of Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church in Gaffney. He was a retired employee of the former Draper Corp.

Surviving are: one son, Johnny Littlejohn (Rosheeda A) of Gaffney; five daughters, Dorothy Hull (Danny) of Gaffney, Aretha Frierson (Charles) of Roebuck, Renee Newson (Darryl) of Jonesboro, GA, Sharon Baker Seldon and Ardenea Byars (Roberick) of Ellenwood, GA; 17 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; 8 great-great grandchildren; 4 great-great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be Friday, 2 p.m., in Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. C.A. Wallace officiating and Rev. Phillip Buckson delivering the eulogy. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

The family is at the home of Danny and Dorothy Hull, 114 Michigan Avenue, Gaffney.
