A. H. Brackett

A.H. Brackett passed away Tuesday, April 11, 2017 in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

He was born in Cherokee County, SC on November 15, 1929 to Johnny and Freelove Jeffries Brackett.

Early in his life, he accepted Christ as his Savior and joined Island Creek Baptist Church. While quite a young man, he moved to New York City where he found employment as Patient Care Technician in Brooklyn Hospital.

He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Lillian Hunter, Onell, Darnell, Johnny Lee, Paul, and James Brackett; and sisters-in-law, Corrie Brackett, Francis Brackett, Jereleen Brackett, Ralph Hayes, B.L. Logan, James Logan, and Jodeen Logan.

Surviving are: his wife, Minnie Logan Brackett of Columbia, SC; 2 sons, Albert Brackett (Anita) of Columbia, S.C. and John Ace Brackett (Sharena) of Brooklyn, N.Y.; 2 daughters, Minnie Brackett of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Domanique Brackett of Pennsylvania; 3 brothers, Rev. A.L. Brackett and Douglas Brackett (Maxine) of Spartanburg, and Winfort Brackett (Vera) of Woodbridge, VA; a sister, Ruby Hayes of Spartanburg; 17 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 20 great-great-grandchildren; Yvonne Brackett, daughter-in-law of Columbia; sisters-in-law, Alice Stevenson, Ruby Mae Brackett, Minnie Makupson, and Hetterley Mitchell; brothers-in-law, Roy Logan, Edward Logan, Francis Logan, and Clemmon Makupson; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Homegoing Services will be Saturday, 2 p.m., in Island Creek Baptist Church, Cowpens, with Rev. Timothy L. Hunter officiating. He will be in state in the church Saturday at 1 p.m.

Mrs. Fannie Porter Smith

Mrs. Fannie Porter Smith, 76, of 573 Lundquist Drive, Spartanburg, S.C., formerly of Blacksburg, entered eternal rest on Saturday, April 1, in Mary Black Memorial Hospital.

Widow of Alonzo King Smith, she was born in York, S.C. and was a daughter of the late Clyde and Geneva Oates Porter.

She was a member of Bethel C.M.E. Church in Blacksburg. She was a former employee of Burton Dixie and B.D. Lee Elementary School.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by siblings, Annie Pearl Porter Borders and Betty K, Allen Shekh.

Surviving are: 2 sons, Brevard Porter of Texas, Bernard Smith of Virginia; 4 daughters, Alice Alexander of Fountain Inn, Deborah Rogers of San Antonia, TX, Margaret Camp of Gaffney, Eunice Smith of Spartanburg, and Petty Officer First Class Lane Smith of Blacksburg, SC; 7 sisters, Lula (Louise) Porter Williams and Viola Rivers, and Eloris Oates, of Charlotte, NC, Patricia Meden Hall of San Francisco, CA, Clarice Bethel of Danville, VA, Faye Hodge of Norfolk, VA, Elizabeth Perry of Atlantic City, NJ, and Paulette Porter of Oakland, CA; one brother, Donald Clyde Porter of Charlotte, NC; uncle, A.V. Oates and Aunt, Ola Gilmore, both of Charlotte; 14 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Homegoing Services will be Saturday, 1 p.m., in Bethel C.M.E. Church, Blacksburg, with Rev. Doris Landrum officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery. She will be in state in the church Saturday at 12 noon.

Mrs. Nita Dawkins McGill

Mrs. Nita Dawkins McGill, 65, of 328 Cresthaven Drive, transitioned to eternity on Saturday, April 1, in her home.

Wife of James Otis McGill, Sr., she was born in Cherokee County and was a daughter of the late Cluff Dawkins, Jr. and Virginia Byars Dawkins.

She was a member of Concord Baptist Church where she served as a Deaconess and member of the Senior Gospel Choir.

Surviving are: her husband, James McGill, Sr. of the home; one son, James Otis McGill, Jr. of Gaffney; one daughter, Sarita McGill, of Gaffney; brothers, Dennis Dawkins, Elywin Dawkins, Kenneth

Dawkins, and Terry Dawkins, all of Gaffney, Cluff Dawkins, III, of Spartanburg; one sister, Rebecca Dawkins Davis of Gaffney; god-sons, Barnette Ratchford and Calvin Smith of Gaffney; 8 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren.

Homegoing Services will be Friday, 2 p.m., in Concord Baptist Church with Dr. Michael A. Bridges officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. She will be in state in the church Friday at 1 p.m.
