Deacon Jacob C. Hunter, Sr.

Deacon Jacob C. Hunter, Sr., 93, of 222 Collins Road, Spartanburg, SC, passed away Sunday, October 2, 2022 in Palmetto Patriot’s Home, Gaffney, SC.

He was a son of the late Trossie Cleo Hunter, Sr. and the late Mrs, Addie Cora Tucker Hunter. “Jake” was the widower of Mrs. Valiree Dewberry Hunter.

He was a member and deacon of Island Creek Baptist Church; an Army Veteran of the Korean War

In addition to his parents and wife, he was also predeceased by two daughters, infant Cathy Hunter and Mrs. Rosa Mae Hunter Underwood; and four siblings: Trossie Jr., Mrs. Tecora Oliver, Bennie Hunter, and Lincoln Hunter.

Surviving are: five children, Mrs. Margaret Sarratt (Retired Master Sergeant James), Rev. Jacob C. Hunter, Jr (Linda), Mrs. Gloria Dawkins (Mark), Roy Hunter, and A. Ray Hunter (Jada); son-in-law, Calvin Underwood; siblings, Mrs. Ceola Posey, Mrs. Ruby Mae Brackett, Mrs. Gladys Johnson, Mrs. Judy foster, and Deacon Columbus Hunter; sister-in-law, Elaine Hunter; 8 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held Friday, October 7th, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in The Gilmore Mortuary in Gaffney.

A Funeral Service with Military Rites will be held Saturday, October 8th, 11:00 a.m., in Island Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Timothy L. Hunter officiating. Interment will follow in the Church Cemetery.

Rhonda Sylvia Todd Hoey

Rhonda Sylvia Todd Hoey, age 68, of 104 Ezra Lane, Gaffney, SC, passed away Tuesday, September 27th, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Wife of Andre William Hoey, she was born in Philadelphia, PA to Joe Antrom and Dolores Todd.

Rhonda was a member of The Kingdom Hall in Gaffney, SC. She was a retired Medical Records Administrator at Jefferson Hospital, Philadelphia, PA.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a step-son, Andre William Hoey, Jr.; also Dolores Thelma Todd, whom was raised like a daughter; and two siblings, Richard Todd and Sharon Todd.

Rhonda leaves to cherish loving memories: her husband, Andre; three sons, Thaymayne Todd, of Las Vegas, NV, Charlie Todd and Leroy Evans, both of Philadelphia, PA; two daughters, Janene Evans and Syreeta Todd, both of Philadelphia. PA; three sisters, Valerie Taylor, Celestine Wiggins (Edward), and Charlene Taylor, all of Philadelphia, PA; 35 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.

A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, 1:00 p.m., in Kingdom Hall with Brother Brian Phifer officiating.

The family is receiving friends at the residence.

Doris Davis Smith

Mrs. Doris Davis Smith, 95, of 1911 W. Buford Street, Gaffney, SC, passed away September 1, 2022, in Spartanburg Medical Center, Spartanburg, SC.

Widow of Dr. Cooper Smith, she was born in Asheville, NC on June 13, 1927.and was a daughter of the late Watsie and Ruth Finley Davis.

Doris began her teaching career in the Cherokee County School District in 1952 and spent most of that time at Granard High School, the segregated school for Blacks during that time. She taught reading and directed many school plays and musicals. After integration, the school was re-named West Junior High. After retiring from the school system in 1985, she continued to work as a substitute teacher until around 2004. Principals lauded her ability as a substitute teacher to maintain order and discipline in the classroom. It was said that she was a substitute for the children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren whose parents she first taught when she arrived in Cherokee County in 1952. 

Doris Smith was a faithful member of Bethesda Presbyterian Church. Over the years, she served as a Deaconess, Children’s Bible Study Leader, and Hospitality Support.  She gave her time to various mission programs including food distribution, vacation bible school, and Mother’s Time Out.

She took great pride and joy in gardening and sharing her crops with neighbors, friends and anyone in need. She was a dedicated wife, mother and teacher who always sought to encourage and inspire.  

Doris was predeceased by her husband, parents, and four siblings, Sadie Cunningham, Watsie Davis, Jr., John Davis, and Furman Davis.

She leaves to cherish loving memories: a son, Dr. Kim Smith, of the home; a daughter,
The Reverend Chineta Goodjoin (Reggie); a granddaughter, Nyla Goodjoin, all of Orange, CA; other relatives; her church family; a multitude of grateful, former students; and many friends.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, November 26, 2022, 2:00 p.m., in Limestone Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Rafus Camp officiating and The Rev. Chineta Goodjoin, eulogist.
