Elaine (Crosby) White was born on April 18, 1940 in Gaffney South Carolina to the late James and Syvelia (Butler) Crosby. Elaine was the 4^th of eleven children born in this union. Her siblings; Willie J. Crosby, Carrie Foster (Eddie), Gordon G. Crosby (Dorothy), Judy L. Belcher, Vincent A. Crosby (Jane).  Siblings who preceded Elaine in Eternal Sleep; Gary L. Crosby, Clifford Crosby, Thomas E. Crosby, Laura M. Crosby Nancy A. Crosby.

A Life Well Lived….

Elaine attended Gaffney Public school system from primary through high school.  Elaine graduated from Granard High in 1958.  Elaine then ventured North as millions of other African Americans did of her era seeking and dreaming of a better life for herself.  Her journey took her to Washington, DC for a moment then to New York. But she pressed further north to Stamford, Connecticut where she settled down and started her family of four children. Married her late husband Roosevelt  Beaufus White.

Elaine was a free spirit, she believed in flexibility, and she valued honesty and authenticity. She believed that everyone needed a harmless outlet from stress and one way she did this was entertaining close friends in her home. Our mother loved music, all of it; everything from the blues, Jazz, R&B country and classical and of course Gospel. Our mother loved to dance and loved dancing with her children and later on in life with her grands. Elaine had a since of humor and a beautiful laugh! Her wit was razor sharp and she was known for speaking her mind. She made her whole family laugh with her outrageous and exaggerated expressions, and all her wittiness.  She was a kind generous and compassionate woman a Lady with impeccable taste of the finer things in life.  She believed in the concept of tough love and was fiercely independent and private. She loved her family and taught her children about Jesus, first through nightly prayers before going to sleep praying before eating and attending The House of God , the first one was Little Zion in Stamford, CT that exposure helped us grow into having a close relationship with The Father and passing on this knowledge to our children, grands and nieces and nephews. She raised her children the best way that she knew, Trusting in GOD, treating people the way you would want to be treated. Showing compassion for each person regardless of their circumstance, position or where they were in life. Everyone should be treated with respect and we, as her children should be an example to others. Yes, we learned a lot from our mother and Ephesians 4:32 is a perfect example of how we viewed our mom. A strong prayer warrior for sure.  That meant getting on her knees and going into prayer on behalf of her children and family, knowing that GOD could do it better than she could.  

During her earlier years Elaine held various positions of employment, homemaker, receptionist and quite a few years in electronics working for Barnes Engineering.  The most important job of all though for Elaine was being a caring and loving mother and grandmother to her children and grandchildren.

Elaine attended Limestone Baptist church as a child and was baptized there as well.  When Elaine moved to Spartanburg, SC she began attending Majority Baptist church for over 18 plus years and was a devoted active member.

Having completed her final chapter on this walk called life, Elaine (Crosby) White, 81, passed peacefully into the Arms of our LORD and Savior in Eternal Sleep on Wednesday, April 13, 2022.  She leaves to cherish her memory her children, her Blessed gifts from our Eternal FATHER:  Barry Fitzgerald Crosby (Valerie), Detra E. Crosby, Vida N. Crosby-Ingram (Charles), Allison S. Crosby. Blessed with 7 Grandchildren; Robert E. Brown, Jr. (Randi), Ciayra K. R. Webb, Alessandria M. Turkvan, Fendi M. Turkvan, Marley D. Webb, Denzel D. Riddick, Dior L. C. Roberts. Blessed even more with 7 Great Grandchildren; Nigel K. Douglas, Arabelle Brown, Bobby Gutierrez, Jr., Kaiden Brown, Za’leya M. Riddick, Zelainy V. Riddick, Zeilani F. Riddick. Dearly Loved nephews, nieces and cousins. Howard Tate, 77, of Shelby, NC, passed away Wednesday, April 6th, in Atrium Health in Shelby.

Widow of Louena Wilson Tate, he was born in Cherokee County, SC and was a son of the late Lawrence and Pearlie Oglesby Tate.

Howard was a 1964 graduate of Granard High School and a retired employee of Magnolia Finishing. He was a member of Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church where he was a deacon, former Chairman of the Deacon Board, and former choir member.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by three siblings, Merle Mobley, Dorothy B. Tate, and The Reverend Dr. L.T. Tate.

He leaves to cherish loving memories: a son Brandy Tate (Nichole), of Dallas, NC; a daughter, Merenda Tate, of Shelby; a brother, Wallace Tate (Donna), of Gaffney; two sisters, Brenda Lee Tate and Josie Wilkins, both of Gaffney; two grandchildren, Brennon and Brentson Tate, of Dallas, NC; several nieces and nephews; many friends.

A Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, April 13th, 2:00 p.m., in Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church, with The Reverend C.A. Wallace officiating.

Evangelist Ruby Clark Askew, of 511 W. Robinson Street, passed away Friday, April 1, 2022, in her home.

Widow of Plato Askew, Sr., she was born in Cherokee County, SC and was a daughter of the late Thomas Clark Sr. and the late Ernestine Davis Clark.

She was a faithful and dedicated member of The Divine True Holiness Church of God in Blacksburg.  She served her church in many capacities including: Mother of the Church, Sunday School Teacher, Church Secretary, Church Treasurer, member of The Holy Gospel Singers, and Prison Ministry.

Ruby was well known and much loved in Blacksburg and Gaffney.  Her delicious cakes, creamed corn, country style steak and gravy graced many tables and delighted the taste buds of those who were blessed to partake of her culinary favors.  She was a former employee of Burton Dixie, and Nestle.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, Sammy Clark and Thomas Clark, Jr.  She leaves to cherish loving memories: two sons, Plato Askew, Jr. (Owens), of Atlanta, GA, Keith Askew, Sr., (Ivey), of San Diego, CA; a daughter, Mary F. Clark, of Atlanta, two sisters, Mary Pearl Greer, of Greenville, SC, and Gloria Gaskins, of Taylors, SC; four grandchildren, Rajshun Livsey and Corbett Livsey (Forsheka), of Gaffney who were raised in the home, Keith Askew, Jr. (Ashley), and Jasmine Askew (Curtis), of California; seven great-grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews, including a nephew, Kenny Terry, of Virginia, raised in the home; sisters-in-law, Thelma Clark, Ida Askew, and Debra Askew; God children, John Mickles (Ruby), Robert Elmore (Deborah), Kristielove Walls, and Charles Littlejohn; caregivers, Robert Gibbs, II, Priscilla Lockhart, Linda Belk, Dora James; a host of other relatives and many friends.

Funeral Service will be held Sunday, April 10^th, 2:00 p.m., in Bethel Baptist Church with Bishop Willie Littlejohn, The Reverend Earl D. Simmons, Sr.; The Reverend J.W. Sanders, Jr., The Reverend Dr. Michael A. Bridges, The Reverend Dr. Timothy L.
