Sylvester Dayton Surratt


Sylvester Dayton Surratt, 80, of 106 Blue Dawn Road, Chesnee, passed away Wednesday, August 8th, in his home.

Widower of Mae Valentine Surratt, he was born in Boiling Springs, NC on May 8, 1918 and was a son of the late Clarence L. Surratt and Mary Alice Hamilton Surratt.

He was a member of Logan Memorial Baptist Church, a retired employee of Cone Mills, and a former member of The Flying Clouds Gospel Singers.

Surviving are: his children, Donald Surratt (Keeley) of Morganton, NC and David Surratt (Cynthia) of Spartanburg; Teresa Burris of Spartanburg; Yulonda Jackson of Chesnee and Isaiah Jackson of the home; three sisters, Mrs. Deborah McIntyre, Ms. Jeannie Surratt, and Mrs Emma Eatman; 10 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Funeral Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Greater Buck Shoals Ministries with Rev. T.E. McDowell officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. He will be in state in the church Wednesday at 1:00 p.m.

Mrs. Christine Holmes Thompson

Mrs. Christine Holmes Thompson, 86, of 155 Watts Drive, passed away Friday, August 3rd, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Widow of Javan Holmes, Jr. and Edd Thompson, she was born in Gaffney and was a daughter of the late John Henry Watts, Sr. and Sadie Manning Watts.

She was a member of Concord Baptist church where she served as a member of the Sr. Missionaries, Sr. Choir, Hymn Choir, and Missionary Circle #2.

He was also preceded in death by 3 siblings, Nellie Littlejohn, Audrey Johnson, and John Henry Watts, Jr.

Surviving are: 2 sons, Louis Holmes, Sr. (Jenelle) and Melvin Holmes, Sr.; 2 daughters, Patricia Holmes Harris, and Sadie H. Phillips (Roger); a brother, Zoar Watts (Barbara); all of Gaffney; sisters-in-law, Mickey T. Corry and Roberta Thompson, both of Blacksburg; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great grandchildren; a neighbor who was like a daughter, Fernina Smith; other relatives and friends.

Funeral Services will be Thursday, 2:00 p.m., in Concord Baptist Church with Dr. Michael A. Bridges, officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. She will be in state in the church Thursday at 1:00 p.m.

James Franklin Smith

James Franklin Smith, 71, of 114 Camellia Circle, passed away Wednesday, July 18, in Mary Black Hospital, Spartanburg.

He was born in Gaffney and was a son of the late Joe and Sadie Shippy Smith.

“Frankie” was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and a former employee of Hoechst Fibers.

Surviving are: a daughter, Sirena Smith of Pittsburgh, Pa.; a brother of Ronald Smith (Evelyn) of Orange, Conn.; four sisters, Santa Jones (Larry) of Shelby, N.C., Johnette Grant, Andrea and Adele Smith, all of Norwalk, Conn.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be Saturday at noon in The Gilmore Mortuary Chapel with Dr. James Sanders, Jr. officiating. Interment will be Monday at 10 a.m., in M.J. Dolly Cooper Veteran’s Cemetery, Anderson.

The family is at the home of Pepras Dalton and Terell Smith, 315 W. Montgomery St.
