Mrs. Mary Ann Hemphill Powell

Mary AnnMrs. Mary Ann Hemphill Powell, 96, of Flint, Michigan, entered eternal rest on May 9th in Flint.

Widow of Richard Powell, she was born in Gaffney and was a daughter of the late Ebb and Hattie Vanlue Hemphill.

She was preceded in death by her husband Richard, children John “June” Powell Jr., daughter, Mildred Powell, great-grand daughter Shamille Johnson, grandson Brian Johnson, siblings; Katherine Hemphill Willis, Boyce (Boss) Hemphill, Peggy Hemphill Wood, Bernstein (Bunt) Hemphill, Edward (Ebb) Hemphill Jr., Emmazine Hemphill Martin, and NettieFaye Hemphill Fernanders Mangham.

Mrs. Powell leaves to cherish her memory: one daughter, Betty Powell of Simpsonville SC,; brother James Edward (Bennie) Hemphill, Gaffney SC; sister-in-law Marian Powell Gaffney, SC, grandchildren, Kecia Johnson, Siri (Brett) Smith, Schlonda Johnson, Mayi (Lamar) Dixon, and a host of great grandchildren, great- great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 23rd, in The Gilmore Mortuary Chapel with Rev. Jennifer Hemphill and Rev. Dorothy Brewton. Commencing immediately after service, the repast will be at Mt. Ararat Church Fellowship Hall, 125 Holly Hill Drive, in Gaffney.

James W. Edwards

James Edwards PictureJames W. Edwards, 77, of St. Stephens, SC, entered eternal rest on Tuesday, May 10.

Widower of Ida Lloyd Edwards, he was born in Cherokee County, SC and was a son of the late Curtis
Sr. and Geneva Dawkins Edwards.

He was a graduate of Granard High School, Claflin University, and South Carolina State University. Mr. Edwards was a retired teacher.

He was a member of The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, Pineville, SC and a former member of Pleasant Grove C.M.E. Church in Gaffney.

Surviving: a daughter, Vanessa Smalls (Dennis); a son, Kurt Edwards (Nicole); a brother, Robert Edwards (Betty) of Gaffney; two sisters, Lucille Quince and Lillie Ruth Edwards of Gaffney.
Sevices will be Saturday, 11 a.m., in The Church of The Redeemer, Pineville, SC

Larry Eugene Thompson

24p1.previewLarry Eugene Thompson, 67, of Naples, Florida entered eternal rest Monday, April 11, in Naples.

He was born in Cherokee County and was a son of the late Horace Thompson, Sr. and Ira Sherrill Thompson.

He was of the Baptist Faith and a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Larry was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Thompson. Surviving are: 4 brothers, Horace Thompson, Jr., of New York, Forace Thompson (Ann) of Atlanta, GA, Weldon Thompson (Dorothy) of Gaffney, and Harold Thompson (Sallie) of Charlotte; 2 sisters, Blony Griffith (Brian) of Charlotte and Bonnie Kate Thompson of New York; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Services will be held Friday, 11 a.m., in The Gilmore Mortuary Chapel with Rev. Larry Brooks officiating.

The family is at the home of Weldon and Dorothy Thompson, 133 Connecticut Avenue.
