Reverend Benjamin Gaffney


The Reverend Benjamin Gaffney, 78, of 269 Beltline Road, passed away Monday, August 28, 2017, in The Peachtree Centre.

He was a member of Island Creek Baptist Church and former pastor of Mark Hill Baptist Church in Jonesville, Mt. Tabor Baptist Church in Gaffney, Salem Zion Baptist Church in Pacolet, and Mt. Nebo Baptist Church in Waxhaw, NC.

He was preceded in death by two children, Marie Workman and Angelas Gaffney, and siblings, Rev. E.C. Gaffney (Hazel), Weldon Gaffney, Warren Gaffney, Anita Hunter, Vivian Moore, and Aileen Brown.

Surviving are: two sons, Benjamin Gaffney, Jr. of Boiling Springs, NC and Angelo Gaffney of Gaffney; a daughter, Monique Gaffney of Gaffney; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be Saturday, September 2nd, 12:00 noon, in Island Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Timothy L. Hunter officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

He will be in state in the church Saturday at 11:00 a.m.

The family is at the home of Mrs. Hettie Gaffney, 312 Providence Road.

Linda Edwards Duncan

Linda Edwards Duncan, 63, of Gaffney, S.C., passed away surrounded by loved ones at Providence Hospital in Columbia, S.C., on Thursday, Aug. 10, 2017, following a brief illness.

Beloved wife of Rev. William L. Duncan, she was born in Cherokee County and was the daughter of the late Willie Lee and Sarah Oglesby Edwards. She was a member of Allen Temple CME Church.

She graduated from Gaffney High School and SC State University where she earned her Bachelor of Science and Master of Education degrees.

Mrs. Duncan was a retired elementary teacher for Cherokee County School District One where she worked for 35 years.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 17, at 1 p.m. in Concord Baptist Church. The family will receive friends in The Gilmore Mortuary on Wednesday, Aug. 16, from 6 p.m-7 p.m.

Dana Danielle Hoey

Dana Danielle Hoey, 37, of 274 Cherokee Ridge Drive, passed away on Monday, August 7, in Spartanburg.

She was born in Gaffney and was a daughter of August 23, 1979 to Lorraine Hoey and Charlie Davidson, Jr.

She attended the public schools in Gaffney and was a former employee of Marriott Hotel in Spartanburg and Lippert, Inc. of Gaffney. Dana was preparing to become a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a daughter, SherMoriya, and grandfather, Frank Smith, Jr.

She leaves to cherish loving memories: husband, Aaron Covington of Beaufort, SC; two sons, Kelon Lemar McGill, Jr. of Gaffney and Elijah J. McGill of the home; a daughter, Makayla Danielle Hoey of the home; Bianca Nicole Jefferies of Gaffney, reared in the home as a daughter; mother, Lorraine Hoey, of Gaffney; step-father, Robert Lee Hoey of Anderson; a brother, Elroy Tate of Gaffney; sisters, Tina Holmes (Louis), Cicley Davidson, Sheba Jefferies, and Reba Hoey; step-sister, Tanya Logan; grandmother, Lucille Smith, all of Gaffney; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Services will be Saturday, 2 p.m., in The Gilmore Mortuary Chapel with Brother Bobby Jefferies and Brother Abraham Duenas.

The family is at the home of her mother, Lorraine Hoey, 1110 Elmore Street.
