Evelyn Armstrong Vernon

Evelyn Armstrong Vernon was the widow of Thomas Earl Vernon. She was born on January 28, 1960 in Cherokee County. She was the daughter of the late Watson Armstrong, Sr. and Forestine Byers Armstrong.

She was a member of Island Creek Baptist Church.

She entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, May 16, 2023, peacefully in her home.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her son, Shondrey Elliott Armstrong, Sr.; two brothers, Gary Lee Armstrong, Sr. and Johnathan Bernard Armstrong.

She leaves to cherish loving memories: two daughters, LaSunya Sheneal Armstrong, of Spartanburg, SC and Jonica Brenea Armstrong, of the home; a daughter-in-law, Deneshia Corry Armstrong, of Gaffney, SC; two sons, Jamal Asa Sha Heed Fowler and Debres Breyon Houey, of the home; brothers, Watson  Armstrong, Jr., of Gaffney, SC, Reverend James Armstrong, Mark Armstrong, Ricky Armstrong, James Thompson, all of Cowpens, SC; sisters, Minister Linda Armstrong, of Greenville, SC, Yolanda Armstrong, Shameka Armstrong, both of Cowpens, SC, Roynette Armstrong, of Greer, SC; sisters in-law, Arlene (Ronald) Whiteside, Arlene Fernanders, Rosie Vernon, of Campobello, SC; brother in-law, Clarence Vernon, of Campobello, SC; grandchildren, Daidrea Ferguson, Jaylen Armstrong, Kennedy Keenan, all of Spartanburg, SC, Joshua Corry, Shondrey Armstrong, Jr., and Cameron Armstrong, all of Gaffney, SC; uncles, Rochelle Byers (Diane), of Fayetteville, NC, Henry Armstrong (Lorraine), Davis Armstrong (Teresa), all of Gaffney, SC; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends..


Funeral Services will be held Sunday, May 21, 2023, 2:00 p.m. in Island Creek Baptist Church with The Rev. Dr. Timothy L. Hunter officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Herman Dodd, Jr.

Herman Dodd, Jr., was born in Spartanburg, SC on October 5, 1969 to Herman Dodd, Sr. and Catherine Lyles Dodd.

He attended the public schools of Spartanburg County and was a graduate of Chesnee High School.

Early in life, he accepted Christ as his Savior and became a member of Brooklyn C.M.E. Church.

Herman was a self-employed concrete finisher and a former employee of an area textile company. 

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by three sisters, Vanessa Twitty, Brenda Dodd, and Janice Dodd. 

On Thursday, May 11, 2023, He answered The Master’s call while in Spartanburg Medical Center, Spartanburg, SC. 

He leaves to cherish loving memories: three sons, Herman Twitty, of Chesnee, SC, Corey McDowell, of Landrum, SC, and Marquell Dodd, of Spartanburg; a sister Rose Feaster (Anthony), of Greer, SC; two grandchildren, Novah McDowell and Aleah McDowell, both of Landrum, SC; other relatives and many friends.


A Funeral Service will be held Saturday, May 20, 2023, 2:00 p.m., in Brooklyn C.M.E. Church Life Center in Chesnee with The Rev. Dr. Timothy L. Hunter. officiating. Interment will follow in the Church Cemetery.

James “Kip” Dawkins

James “Kip” Dawkins, 50, of 523 W. Montgomery Street, Gaffney, passed away Saturday, April 29, 2023, in Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home.

Kip was born in Gaffney, SC and was a son of Wilma (Lavander) Dawkins Davis and the late Herbert O. Smith. He was reared in the home of Sybil Wilkins and the late Wash Gene Wilkins.

He joined Bethel Baptist Church at an early age.  He was a Gaffney High School graduate and was a former employee at Freightliner Custom Chassis.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Ronnie Smith and Shawn Dawkins.

He passed away Saturday, April 29, 2023, in Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home.

He leaves to cherish loving memories a son, Jalen Dawkins, of Spartanburg; siblings, Robin Williams, of New Jersey, Shavonia “Necey” Lawrence (Darrell), of Washington, D.C., Traci Smith, Dysheka Smith, Janine Dawkins Cumberlander, all of Gaffney, Michael Studyvance and Joel Trent Dawkins (Quensen), both of Gaffney, Altonnia, DeAngelo, Wash, and Kimberly Wilkins; reared in the home as siblings, Keithland, Manasha, Ninda and Ernest, Jr. McDonald; two aunts, Maxine Anderson (David), of New York City and Trudy Dawkins, of Gaffney; a special cousin, Shannon, Dawkins, of Gaffney; other relatives and friends.


A Funeral Service will be held Saturday, May 13, 2023, at 1:00 p.m., in The Gilmore Mortuary Chapel with The Rev. Dr. J.W. Sanders, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in Gaffney Memorial Park.

The family is receiving friends at the home of his sister, Traci Smith, 123 Maplewood Drive, Gaffney, SC.
