Charles “Sunny” Hames

Charles “Sunny” Hames, 91, of 432 Little Hope Road, Gaffney, passed away Thursday, January 5, 2023, in his home.

He was born in Cherokee County and was a son of the late King Hames, Sr. and Alice Hambright Hames.

After graduating from the public schools in Gaffney, SC, he enlisted in the US ARMY. He was a retired Security Guard for Duke Power. Sunny was a member of Galilee Baptist Church where he was named the “Father of The Church.”

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a son, Calvin Hames, Sr; a grandchild, Jason Brewton; siblings, King D. Hames, Jr., Nettie Ratchford, Florence Berel, Ruth Plummer, Delois Graham, and Elizabeth Dawkins.

He leaves to cherish loving memories: two sons, Charles Hames, Jr, of San Jose, CA and Charles Bernard Hames (Cynthia), of Blacksburg, SC; two daughters, Helen Gloria Hames, of Gaffney, SC and Patricia Ann Bradley, of Blacksburg, SC; a sister, Margaret Hicks, of Gaffney, SC, 14 grandchildren, a host of great and great-great grandchildren, other relatives, and friends.

A Funeral Service with Military Honors will be held Tuesday, January 10, 2023, 1:00 p.m., in Galilee Baptist Church with Rev. Lewis Duckett officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.


The family is at the home of Charles and Cynthia Hames, 412 Little Hope Rd., Blacksburg, SC.

Johnnie Dawkins

Johnnie Ray Dawkins, 64, of 706 State Line Rd., Gaffney, passed away Wednesday, January 4, 2023, in Gaffney, SC.

He was born in Mount Vernon, NY and was a son of the late Rose Dawkins Smith and Johnny and Naomi Dawkins.

In addition to his parents he preceded in death by his grandparents, Grady and Flora Dawkins Watkins; two brothers, Calvin Dawkins and Clarence Dawkins.

He leaves to cherish loving memories: a son Shannon Hairston, of Lexington, NC; a brother, Grady Dawkins (Wanda), of Gaffney, SC; two sisters, Lucy Littlejohn and IV Dawkins, both of Gaffney, SC; sister-in-law, Betty Ann Dawkins; a special friend, Patsy Ann Hairston, Lexington, NC; special nieces and nephew, Shantika, Lakeisha, and Rosalind Dawkins, and Marcus Dawkins; other nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Funeral Service will be held Monday, January 9, 2022, 1:00 p.m., in The Gilmore Mortuary Chapel with The Reverend Dr. Michael A. Bridges officiating.

The family is at the home of his sister, Lucy Littlejohn 254 North Green River Road, Gaffney SC 29341.

Horace Lee Smith

Horace Lee Smith, 74, of 106 Ellis Ferry Rd., Apt-101, Gaffney, passed away Sunday, January 1st, in Spartanburg Medical Center.

He was born in Cherokee County on January 10, 1948, to Whitworth and Ola Roberts Smith. 

Horace was employed at Kings Mountain Brick in the Maintenance Department. He was a member of Mikes Creek Missionary Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents he was predeceased by siblings, Thomas Smith, Sr., Deacon John Wayne Smith, Sr., Leola Manning, Minister Nettie Camp, Martha Dawkins.

He leaves to cherish loving memories: three sons, Patrick Smith (Patrice), of Spartanburg, Phillip Smith (Tela), of Gaffney, Charles Craig, Sr. (Makayla), of Gaffney; four daughters, Catina Lipscomb (Donald), Priscilla Washington, Lisa Smith, and Tasha Sullivan, all of Gaffney; an aunt, Opie Tate, of Gaffney; two brothers, Eddie Dean Smith, Sr. (Wanda), of Spartanburg and Willie Ellis, Sr., of Gaffney; three sisters, Rev. Modestine Manning(James), of Mooresboro, Mae Frances Thomas, of Spartanburg, and Minister Frances Wilkie, of Gaffney; two brothers-in-law, Carl Dawkins and Willie Dean Camp, both of Gaffney; 23 grandchildren; a host of great grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, January 7th, 12:00 noon in Mikes Creek Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Courtney Mills officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
