Jessie LaVerne McGill

28p1-2Jessie LaVerne Goode McGill, 74, of 146 Drucilla Drive, entered eternal rest on Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2014, at her home.

Born in Gaffney, she was the wife of Frank McGill of the home and a daughter of the late Stella Mae Goode Evans. She was raised by her grandparents, the late James and Louise Goode. She was a member of Concord Baptist Church, where she served as a member of the Senior Choir and Sunday School.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Faye McGill of Gaffney and Angela Henry of Charlotte; two sons, Frank McGill Jr. (Shirley) of Sharon and Calvin McGill (Angela) of Mauldin; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 11, at 1 p.m. at Concord Baptist Church with Dr. Michael Bridges officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. She will lie in state in the church Saturday from 12-1 p.m.

Daisy “Dee” Wood

Daisy Wood

Daisy Marie “Dee” Wood, 72, of 2901 Mountain Ash Court, Raleigh, N.C., entered eternal rest on Friday, Sept. 26, 2014.

Born in Gaffney, she was a daughter of the late Deacon Conn ington Wood and Jeannie Marie Huskey Wood. She was a 1958 graduate of Granard High School and obtained a B.A. degree at South Carolina State College and MBA degree at Columbia University Graduate School of Business.

She held executive positions in major companies including Exxon Corp. in New York City and Houston; Raytheon Systems, Delta Airlines Technology, and GE Appliances & Infrastructure. At the time of her death, she was president of DMW Choice Consultants Inc. (previously D.M. Wood & Associates).

She was a former member of Bethel Baptist Church in Gaffney, Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church in Houston, TX, Metropolitan Baptist Church in Washington, DC, St. Stephen Baptist Church in Louisville, KY, Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Arlington, VA, Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta and First Baptist Church in Raleigh.

Daisy was life member of Delta Sigma Theta Inc. and served as national president of the National Pan-Hellenic Council and the National Finance Committee. She served as a board member for the Black Leadership Forum, the National Inter-fraternity Foundation, Rainbow/P.U.S.H. Coalition, Order of Omega Honorary Society, and Coalition of 100 Black Women-Atlanta Chapter. She was an active member of the Black MBA Association, National Urban League, National Council of Negro Women, Women in Business, Women in Aviation, American Society for Personnel Administration and American Management Association.

One of her greatest accomplishments was cofounding of the African American Forum that enhanced her mission to strengthen African American employees at GE with professional development.

In addition to her parents, Daisy was preceded in death by three siblings, James, Shirley and Connington.

She leaves to cherish loving memories several nieces and nephews, including her “blessings,” Tosha, Mona and Jason (whom she raised as her own after the death of their mother, Shirley); other relatives and many friends.

Jessie Jeffries

Jessie2aJessie Jeffries, 74, of Cowpens, entered eternal rest on Saturday, Aug. 23, 2014, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Widower of Rosa Lee Burris Jeffries, he was born in Cherokee County and was the son of the late Everlena Jeffries and Robert Johnson. He was a member of Island Creek Baptist Church and a retired construction worker.

Jessie was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and a sister, Elvira Hunter.

He leaves to cherish precious memories: a brother-in-law, Deacon Columbus Hunter; two nephews, Rev. Bishop Jimmy Hunter and Rev. Timothy L. Hunter; great-nieces, Jahné Parham (Chris), and Chisa Putman (Byron); great-nephews, Jonathan Hunter (Erica), and Jordan Hunter; cousins, Mrs. Elvena Hollis, Miss Sarah Hollis, Miss Angela Hollis, Mrs. Stella Palmer, James Wilson, George Oliver, Calvin Linder, Johnny Hogue (Cordelia), Dr. A.L. Brackett, A.H. Brackett, Winfort Brackett (Vera), Douglas Brackett (Maxine), and Ruby Hayes; 3 step-sons, Rev. Ralph Burris, Rev. Monroe Burris and Rev. Freddie Burris; 4 step-daughters, Rev. Floree Copeland, Misses Shirley Burris, Doris Burris and Teresa Burris; 20 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Aug. 28, at 1 p.m. at Island Creek Baptist Church with Dr. A.L. Brackett officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. He will lie in state in the church Thursday from noon until the hour of the services.

The family is receiving friends at 210 Smith Road, Cowpens.
