Robert Earl Lane

Robert Earl Lane, age 68, of 203 Lincoln Dr., passed away Tuesday, November 9th, in Regional Hospice Home in Spartanburg.

He was born in Union County and was a son of the late Layzell Lane, Sr. and the late Rothena Johnson Lane. He was the widower of Mary Helen Conley Lane.

Robert was a graduate of Boys High School in Brooklyn, NY. He was a former employee of Brown’s Market and Brown’s Packing Company in Gaffney.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, The Reverend William Lane and Anthony Lane; Robert leaves to cherish loving memories: three daughters, Tara Lane, Patreana Lane, and Laquanda Lane, all of Gaffney; a sister, Earnestine Davis (Eddie Dean), of Gaffney; two brothers, Layzell Lane, Jr. and Brian Buckson, of Gaffney; 7 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Funeral Service will be Wednesday, November 17, 2021, 2:00 p.m., in New Mount Zion Baptist Church with The Reverend Don Manning and The Reverend Jeff Dawkins. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. He will be in state in the church Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. The family is at the home of Laquanda Lane, 130 McCluney Drive.

Hermia “Trice” Wood

Miss Hermia Wood, age 45, of 805 W. Fairview Ave., Gaffney, passed away Wednesday, in Cherokee Medical Center. 

She was born in Cherokee County and was the daughter of Dennis and Fatina Tate Wood.

“Trice” was a graduate of Gaffney High School.  She obtained a BS Degree in Psychology at Bennett College, Greensboro, NC and a Master’s Degree at the University of Washington in Seattle.

She was a faithful member of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church where she served as a former choir member, secretary and director.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Calvin Ferrell Wood; paternal grandparents, Dec. Herman and Lucille Wood; maternal grandparents, Tizer and Thelma Tate.

In addition to her parents, she leaves to cherish loving memories: sons, Malachi C. Wood and William Sheroid Camp, both of the home; step-daughters, Kyerica Camp and Aaliyah Geter, of Spartanburg; two brothers, Herman Dennis Wood, Jr., of Greenville and Baxter Derrell Wood, of Gaffney; brothers reared in the home, Elder Arthur L. Shuler, of Las Vegas, NV, Ikie Curry, Jr., of Tennessee; sister reared in the home, Charlieka D. Littlejohn, of Gaffney, SC; aunts, Emma Grant, Mildred Littlejohn, Sally Clark (Dennis), Shirley Jenkins, Teresa Davidson, all of Gaffney, Mary Littlejohn, of Spartanburg; uncles, Thurman Tate (Lily), Charles Tate (Angela), Sherman Tate, Furman Tate, Herman Tate, and Kenny Dawkins (Brenda), all of Gaffney; other relatives and friends.

The Funeral Service will be Wednesday, November 17th, 2:00 p.m., in Mt. Sinai Baptist Church with Rev. C.A. Wallace officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. She will be in state in the church Wednesday at 1:00.

Lucille McCluney Smith

Lucille McCluney Smith, 89, of 123 Little Drive, Gaffney, entered eternal rest on Tuesday, November 9th, in her home.

Widow of Frank Smith, Jr., she was born in Cherokee County and was a daughter of the late Curtis and Minnie Anderson Smith.

She was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses and a retired employee of Spring
City Knitting.

She was predeceased by 5 children, John Frank Smith, Dorothy McDowell, Cephus Thompson, Diana Smith, and Denise Clark; sisters, Josephine James and Betty Jo Sims.

She leaves to cherish loving memories: 3 sons, Michael M. Smith, of Charlotte, NC, Joseph B. Smith and Calvin Davidson, of the home; 3 daughters, Lorraine Hoey, of Gaffney, Nicole S. Johnson (Leroy), of Blacksburg, Tracy S. Reid (Timothy), of Norfork, VA; a brother, Curtis McCluney, Jr., sisters-in-law, Olivia Smith and Geraldine Buchanan; nieces, Leevon Littlejohn and Anita Smith; of Gaffney; a host of grandchildren as well as Olivia Smith and Geraldine Buchanan; great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Public Viewing will be Saturday, November 13, 2021 from 1:00 – 6:00 p.m.

A Funeral Service will be Sunday, 2:00 p.m., in The Gilmore Mortuary Chapel with Brother Brian Phifer officiating.
