Minister Stanley Michael Watts

Minister Stanley Michael Watts, 67, of 112 Wilford Road, Blacksburg, passed away Tuesday, February 24th, in Cherokee Medical Center.

Husband of Peggy Thompson Watts, he was born in Cherokee County and was a son of Tecora Norris Watts and the late Wilbert Watts.

He was a graduate of Blacksburg High School. He furthered his education at Newberry College where he was an outstanding student and the first African American to play with the College’s football team. Stanley was a veteran of the United States Navy and a member of New Covenant Ministries.

Stanley is survived by: his wife, Peggy Watts; mother, Tecora Watts, of Blacksburg; two sons, Leander Watts and Stanley Watts, II, of Blacksburg; a daughter, Carol Ruffin, of Blacksburg; two brothers, Gary Watts and Jonathan Watts, of Blacksburg; a sister, Kathy Jones, of Atlanta, GA; an uncle, John Paul Norris (Earnestine), of Gaffney; two aunts, Willie Wells, of Washington, D.C., Doris Harris, of Gaffney; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

A Memorial Service will be Saturday, 11:00 a.m., in The Gilmore Mortuary Chapel with Bishop Adell Whittenburg officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to
New Covenant Ministries by text to 7797, or call NCCMINGIVE.

Mrs. Alice Lee Petty Thompson

Alice Lee Petty Thompson, 90, of Gaffney, passed away Friday, February 19, 2019, in the Peachtree Centre. She was born in Cherokee County, SC on August 7, 1930 to Fred and Daisy Hopper Petty.

She was the widow of Charlie Thompson, a member of Suck Creek Baptist Church, and a retiree of Cone Mills.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a son, R.J. Thompson; a daughter, Phyllis Thompson; a brother, Archie Petty. She leaves to cherish loving memories: two sons, Bernard Thompson (Dorothy), of Cliffside, NC and Horace Thompson (Annie) of Kingstown, NC; four sisters, Minnie Smith (Rev. Arthur J.), of Caroleen, NC, Nellie Hollis (Victor), of Gaffney, SC, Gracie Smith, of Gaffney, and Lula Lee (Ernest), of Shelby; NC; 9 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

The Funeral Service will be Thursday, 1:00 p.m., in The Gilmore Mortuary Chapel with Rev. Arthur J. Smith officiating. Interment will be in Gaffney Memorial Park.

Mrs. Rosa Mae Rodgers

Rosa Mae Rodgers, 102, was born on May 27, 1918 to Ernest McKinney and Pearline Mickles. She passed away on February 13, 2021 in Inova Hospital in Alexandria, VA.
Rosa migrated to Washington, DC in the 1950s. Rosa accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior and was a devoted Christian, and member of Mt. Ennon Baptist Church in Clinton, MD.
She was a longtime member of Beulah Baptist Church where she served on ministries that included the Nurses Unit, the Ushers Unit, and was a Boy Scout leader.
Early on, Rosa identified her passion for sewing, and enrolled and graduated from Armstrong Vocational High School in 1955. She obtained employment with Sibley Memorial Hospital and worked there for 15 years as a seamstress before retiring in 1979. Following retirement, Rose returned to Gaffney for a visit and reconnected with a childhood friend, B.K. Rodgers. Rose and B.K. married in 1981 and settled in Gaffney. They were devoted members of Concord Baptist Church until his death in 1986. Following B.K.’s death, Rose returned to Clinton, Maryland.
Rosa was preceded in death by her daughter, Jacqueline Foskey; adopted daughter, Dorothy Shaw, sister, Rhoda Webster; and brother Jack Humphries. Rosa leaves here on earth her three grandchildren, Kenneth Powell (Washington, DC), Donna (Todd) Jones (Clinton, Maryland), and Brian (Felicia) Powell (Ft. Washington, MD); five great-grandchildren, Trenton Jones (Upper Marlboro, MD), Travis Jones (Clinton, Maryland), India Brown , Breanna Brown and Amaya Powell (of Ft. Washington, Maryland); a first cousin, Ruth Phillips (Gaffney, SC), and a host of nieces and nephews.


Family will receive friends on Tuesday, February 23, 2021 at Strickland Funeral Services, 6500 Allentown Road, Camp Springs, Maryland for a viewing at 10 a.m. and a Private Funeral Service at 11 a.m. A Graveside Service will be held on Friday, February 26, 2021, 12:00 noon, in Concord Baptist Church Cemetery, Gaffney, SC., with Rev. Dr. Michael Bridges officiating.
