On the morning of June 28, 2020, the Lord whispered to Evelyn Jean Champion that she had fought a good fight, she had finished her course, she had kept the faith, and now laid up for her is a crown of righteousness.
Born in Gaffney, SC. on January 27, 1938 to the late Barney and Lillie Mae Brown, Evelyn joined Ebenezer Baptist Church. She graduated from Granard High School and continued her education at Barber Scotia College, where she learned the seamstress trade.
Evelyn was employed for more than 30 years as a seamstress for Hamrick’s. She was affectionately known to make clothes, to knit, and crochet blankets and scarves for family and friends.
During her early years, she was joined in matrimony to the late Thomas Clyburn Champion, Sr. and form this union, six children were born: Clay Champion, Sr. (Lina), Marvin Champion, Thomas Champion Jr. (Shirley), Donna Griffin (Neal), Chris Champion (Cheryl), and Diane Champion Talbert;12 grandchildren, Clay Jr., Claynesha, Sacoya, LaQuesha, Isaiah, Ashley, Hannah, Candace, Kristian, Jeremiah, Jalyn, and Camille; 3 great grandchildren, Caden, Kairo, and Kayleigh, and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and other relatives and friends.
In 1975, Evelyn made the life-changing decision to accept Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior, and she joined the Mitchell Chapel F.B.H. Church where she served as a Sunday School Teacher, a Missionary, Deaconess, and Trustee. She loved the Lord with all her heart and raised her children to the Lord and encourages all her grandchildren to have their own personal relationship with the Lord.
Funeral Services will be held Thursday, July 2nd, at 12:00 noon, in The Gilmore Mortuary Chapel with Pastor E.D. Lawson officiating. Interment will follow in Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery.
