Douglas McArthur Houey, 74, of 2217 Surrey St., Columbia, SC, passed away on Saturday, April 15, 2017.

Husband of Vivian Bradley Houey, he was born in Cherokee County and was a son of the late Shadrack and Gertrude Watts Houey.

McArthur was a graduate of Granard High School and Denmark Technical College. He was a former member of Concord Baptist Church. At the time of his death, he was a member and deacon of First Calvary Baptist Church in Columbia.

Services will be Saturday, 1:00 p.m., in First Calvary Baptist Church, 1401 Pine St., Columbia.

Frank Smith, Jr.

Frank Smith, Jr., 85, of 123 Little Drive, passed away on Friday, April 14th, in his home. He was the husband of Lucille McCluney Smith.

Husband of Lucille McCluney Smith, he was born in Cherokee County and was a son of the late Frank Sr. and Minnie Gertrude Rodgers Smith.

He was a member of Mt. Tabor Baptist Church and a retired butcher at Brown Packing Company.

He was preceded in death by 3 children, Diana Smith, Dorothy McDowell, and Cephus Thompson, Jr.; 3 siblings, Douglas, James Copeland, and Joe Louis Smith.

Surviving are: his wife, Lucille Smith of the home; 4 sons, John Frank Smith, Joseph B. Smith, and Calvin Smith, all of Gaffney, Michael M. Smith of Charlotte, NC; 4 daughters, Lorraine Hoey of Gaffneyy, Denise Clark (Larry) of Richmond, VA, Nicole Alexander of Gaffney, and Tracy S. Reid (Timothy) of Norfolk, VA; 2 sisters, Geraldine Buchanan and Olivia Smith, both of Gaffney; brother-in-law, Crawley Smith of Gaffney; special friend, Linda Reid of Norfolk; 33 grandchildren, including Travis J. Smith and DaNisha L. Smith, reared in the home, of Gaffney; 46 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be Thursday, 1:00 p.m., in The Gilmore Mortuary Chapel with Brother Earl Buckson officiating.

A. H. Brackett

A.H. Brackett passed away Tuesday, April 11, 2017 in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

He was born in Cherokee County, SC on November 15, 1929 to Johnny and Freelove Jeffries Brackett.

Early in his life, he accepted Christ as his Savior and joined Island Creek Baptist Church. While quite a young man, he moved to New York City where he found employment as Patient Care Technician in Brooklyn Hospital.

He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Lillian Hunter, Onell, Darnell, Johnny Lee, Paul, and James Brackett; and sisters-in-law, Corrie Brackett, Francis Brackett, Jereleen Brackett, Ralph Hayes, B.L. Logan, James Logan, and Jodeen Logan.

Surviving are: his wife, Minnie Logan Brackett of Columbia, SC; 2 sons, Albert Brackett (Anita) of Columbia, S.C. and John Ace Brackett (Sharena) of Brooklyn, N.Y.; 2 daughters, Minnie Brackett of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Domanique Brackett of Pennsylvania; 3 brothers, Rev. A.L. Brackett and Douglas Brackett (Maxine) of Spartanburg, and Winfort Brackett (Vera) of Woodbridge, VA; a sister, Ruby Hayes of Spartanburg; 17 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 20 great-great-grandchildren; Yvonne Brackett, daughter-in-law of Columbia; sisters-in-law, Alice Stevenson, Ruby Mae Brackett, Minnie Makupson, and Hetterley Mitchell; brothers-in-law, Roy Logan, Edward Logan, Francis Logan, and Clemmon Makupson; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Homegoing Services will be Saturday, 2 p.m., in Island Creek Baptist Church, Cowpens, with Rev. Timothy L. Hunter officiating. He will be in state in the church Saturday at 1 p.m.
